If you’re missing a lot of teeth, implant-supported dentures may be the solution for you

Implant-supported dentures are better for your oral health than traditional dentures

If you are missing teeth, say more than 4 or 5, an implant-supported denture is generally the best treatment option. At Brisbane Dental Implant Group we offer a number of implant-supported denture treatments to help a variety of patients.

Implant-supported dentures vs. traditional dentures

Traditional dentures may restore the aesthetics of your smile, but they lack the functionality to look after your jaw.  Nine of the problems associated with traditional dentures are:

  1. Gum irritation
  2. Minimal chewing support
  3. Jawbone lacks stimulation
  4. Bone loss
  5. Receding gums
  6. Face shape alteration (due to bone loss)
  7. Impaired talking ability
  8. Reduced food taste
  9. Embarrassing clicking

These problems are associated with traditional dentures because they do not provide support for your jaw. There is no artificial tooth root to provide stimulation and therefore over time further problems can develop.

Implant-supported dentures do not come with these problems because the dental implants used to support your denture helps to maintain bone and gum structure. Two of the biggest advantages of implant-supported dentures is they make eating and speaking more comfortable. And there’s none of the worry of your dentures falling out.

Brisbane Dental Implant Group offers 3 implant-supported dentures

When you visit our Coorparoo dental practice for your initial consultation one of our team with discuss with you your options.  An x-ray of your jaw will need to be taken to determine if you have adequate jawbone to support dental implants.

If you do not have sufficient jaw bone density one of our oral and maxillofacial surgeons can perform a bone graft.

Once your jaw is able to hold dental implants the number of implants and the best type of denture for you will be discusses.

The three implant-supported overdentures we offer are:

  1. Fixed

A fixed implant-supported overdenture is a custom-made denture attached to dental implants. The number of dental implants used varies from patient to patient.  You will not be able to remove this denture, but when your dentist will be able to at your regular dental check-ups.

  1. Removable

Similar to fixed implant-supported overdenture, a removable one involves a bar being attached to the implants and the denture to the bar.  This will allow you to clip the overdenture into place. It also makes removing it for cleaning much easier for you.

  1. Implant-stabilised

An implant-stabilised denture is when a small number of implants are used to stabilise your dentures. Like a traditional denture you will be able to take your denture out each night to clean it.
