Replacing one or more missing teeth
One of the reasons implant dentistry is the most popular treatment for replacing a missing tooth is: it is the best. Unlike dentures and dental bridges, implant dentistry replaces the whole tooth. The dental implant replaces the tooth root and the restoration – a dental crown, bridge or denture – replaces the crown of the tooth.
What this means for you is if you are missing teeth we can use dental implants to support a bridge or denture. The benefit being the dentures won’t slide: the bridgework won’t involve healthy tooth structure to be removed.
Another advantage of implant dentistry is that it looks after the health of your jaw, your bite and the teeth on either side of the gap.
Dental implants and your oral health
When you lose a tooth it affects the health of your jaw. The bone starts to erode and it does not grow back. This happens because it relies on the load pressure of a tooth for stimulation. No tooth no stimulation and so it gradually starts to erode.
With implant dentistry this issue is resolved and you will be able to maintain the health of your gums, jaw and surrounding teeth. However, you will require regular check-ups with dental implants because they are susceptible to gum disease and other oral health problems.
When you lose a tooth the teeth on either side of the gap start to shift; apart from the problems this can cause with your gums it also poses problems with your bite alignment. Traditionally, when you lost a tooth a dental bridge would be placed. The problem with a dental bridge is it requires natural healthy tooth structure to be removed.

On average implant dentistry can take between 4 to 6 months depending on a number of factors. Part of the reason this treatment takes long is because of the time it takes for your jaw to heal around the dental implant. This process is known as osseointegration and is where the jawbone fuses around the dental implant.
Once the jawbone has healed the prosthetic will be placed and you’ll have a whole tooth replacement.
